Ask a Field Sales Representative in Ghana how to reach the third outlet on Tuesday's beat and you will rarely get a street and a number. You will get a sequence: turn at the filling station, pass the lorry station, the provision shop is the blue one behind the tailor. That description works. It is accurate, it is how the rep was taught the route, and it is completely unusable by anyone else on the team.

An Official Address Standard, and a Landmark Habit

Ghana is not an unaddressed country. GhanaPostGPS is the official national digital addressing system, dividing the whole territory into five-metre grid squares and issuing an alphanumeric code for each one, so every kiosk, container shop and market stall sits inside a square that already has a name. A digital address has also become a standard requirement when applying for a Ghana Card through the National Identification Authority, which means a great many traders have encountered a code even if they have never used one commercially.

What has not followed is day-to-day trade practice. Take-up in distribution has been uneven, and the working habit on a beat is still landmark-led. What to Capture at Each Outlet

A useful record combines the machine-readable and the human-readable, because in Ghana you need both:

  • A pinned coordinate captured on site at the shop front, never from the office and never from a van parked two junctions away.

Traditional trade moves. A container shop is relocated when a road is widened. A table-top seller shifts to a better junction. Stalls change hands inside a traditional market.
